The Story

For the real scoop on Three Twins’ flavors, we went straight to the source: Founding Twin Neal Gottlieb. Here’s what he says about our creative, coffee-forward Mocha Difference.

First and foremost, be warned. Mocha Difference is caffeinated. Eat it at at your own risk. One scoop of this guy has roughly the same amount of caffeine as one cup of coffee, which means that a pint has enough caffeine to keep you up all night.

Now that we have that out in the open, please allow me to tell you what I love about Mocha Difference.

True to its name, Mocha Difference is different than any other ice cream that you are likely to find. It is coffee ice cream with flecks of dark chocolate. The base of our mocha contains not only the requisite coffee, but also a healthy dose of vanilla. When a certain national brand of pseudo-European ice cream launched a line of ice cream with only five ingredients (including a coffee flavor), I was amused. Most of their flavors would be a lot better if they added another ingredient: vanilla.

When you flip the lid off a pint of Three Twins Mocha Difference, you'll probably notice that its color is not the sickly off-white that we've grown to expect out of coffee ice cream. Nope, it has a beautiful, rich coffee color that is indicative of the unabashedly delicious ice cream you are about to experience. And please know, that color is from the presence of lots of coffee. I wouldn't even joke about adding artificial color to my ice cream.

Just like in our Mint Confetti, we melt really tasty and oh-so-slightly bitter chocolate, and then we pump it into our coffee ice cream base to make perfect little flecks of chocolate with great texture and great chocolate taste to match. The result is really something special.

Make a difference to your taste buds and indulge. Fun fact: Like Mint Confetti, Mocha Difference made its debut on August 27, 2005, day one of Three Twins Ice Cream's existence. I thought I was being cute when I named this one Mocha Difference, but I have since debated renaming it to Mocha Confetti to be in line with Mint Confetti and the lesser known Confettis currently available only at our scoop shops, including Coconut Almond Confetti and Peanut Butter Confetti.
