The Story of Cookies & Cream

For the real scoop on Three Twins’ flavors, we went straight to the source: Founding Twin Neal Gottlieb. Here’s what he says about one of his favorites, Cookies and Cream.

I am often asked to name my favorite Three Twins flavor, and it’s a question I most often evasively answer with, "Who is your mother's favorite child?" (Like many of you, I know that I am the favorite, but this isn't something I parade around to the public. It makes the other twins mad.)

I am extremely proud of many of our flavors, as they’re often a best-in-class version of a classic flavor. Or, as in the case of Dad's Cardamom or Lemon Cookie, they are pretty much the only examples of such deliciousness on the market. Cookies and cream was my go-to flavor as a child, except for a brief phase around age five or six when I was a bubble gum ice cream aficionado. To this day, cookies and cream remains among my favorites, and our version of this timeless treat is one of the creations that makes me most proud.

Most cookies and cream ice cream should be called "Cookies and Plain," as manufacturers typically save a nickel or so by leaving out the vanilla. I think that is silly, but then again, fortunes have probably been made by saving all of those nickels. For Three Twins Cookies and Cream, I insist on using vanilla – and more than just a smidge. The base of our Cookies and Cream is our full-strength, unmistakably delicious Madagascar Vanilla Ice Cream. We then add finely crushed cookies to the base to give our Cookies and Cream its unbelievably delicious taste (and its slightly grayish hue). But wait, we're not done yet! We then add chunks of organic chocolate sandwich crème cookies to complete our masterpiece.

While the other guys’ creations could be called "Cookies and Plain," ours could be called, "Cookies and Inconceivably Delicious Madagascar Vanilla and Pulverized Cookies and Chunks of More Cookies and I Can't Believe Something So Simple Can Be So Amazingly Good." But, we'll keep it simple with "Cookies and Cream," and we’ll leave it to you to create your own run-on sentence of praise.

Fun fact: Cookies and Cream was originally called Milk & Cookies. After one too many people asked me if Milk & Cookies was like Cookies and Cream, I decided to change its name to the more commonly recognized version.
